1 Corinthians 9:24–27 (NASB95)
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Verses 4-6 talks about why Paul is the best candidate for having confidence in the flesh. Remember that the Judaizers have come in teaching a works based Salvation. Paul quickly addresses the issue with the Judaizers. (The Judaizers are proselytes)
7 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
“But” – certainly
“Gain” – profit
“Had” – happened to me, or belonged to me
“Counted” – be of the opinion
“For the sake of” – on account of
“loss” – damage, or disadvantage
Paul says in Vs. 7 – certainly all of the profit that I myself have gained, I am of the opinion that it is a disadvantage to me b/c of Christ.
Look at Acts 9 and see how Paul is beginning to know Christ –
As we continue in the Philippians 3 today we are going that as we run this race we (believers) will grow in the follow areas: 1) Grow in our knowledge of Christ, 2) Grow in our understanding of the righteousness of Christ, 3) Grow in our understanding of the power of Christ, and 4) grow in our understanding of our participation with Christ.
Interrogative question - How are doing at running the race?
1. Grow in our knowledge of Christ – vs. 8
1. Grow in our knowledge of Christ – vs. 8
8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,
Paul directly refutes the teaching of the Judizers who taught a works based Salvation. All of the material things that I have achieved are loss according to the greatness of Jesus Christ.
“knowledge about Christ”
25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
23 Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.
23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 “For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?
3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.
2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
2 that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself,
2. In our understanding of the righteousness of Christ – vs. 9
2. In our understanding of the righteousness of Christ – vs. 9
9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
“Found” – discover
Paul is intense he wants to discover Christ all the more –
Paul’s righteousness according to the law is worthless Paul wants the righteousness that comes from faith in Christ
“Righteousness of God…”
22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
The knowledge that Paul had about Christ changed his life – He put his faith and trust in Christ alone for Salvation and at that point the Righteousness of Christ was imputed to his account.
3. Grow in our understanding of the power of Christ – vs. 10a
3. Grow in our understanding of the power of Christ – vs. 10a
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
“Know” – learn, be familiar with
2 Corinthians 4:7–12 (NASB95)
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 8 we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing;
9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death works in us, but life in you.
9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
4. Grow in our participation with Christ – vs. 10b-11
4. Grow in our participation with Christ – vs. 10b-11
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; 11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
We participate with Christ in two ways according to the text –
Sufferings
24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.
13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.
9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
Glorification
5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming,
SO WHAT?
How does your life display Christ? (allow some time to discuss this)
